Jamaat in favor of expanded Electoral College voting in presidential elections

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has voted in favor of expanded electoral college voting in the presidential election.

Abdullah Mohammad Taher highlighted Jamaat’s position during a break in the Consensus Commission’s discussions with political parties at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital today, Thursday.

Abdullah Mohammad Taher said that the National Consensus Commission has proposed introducing the electoral college system in the presidential election. According to the proposal, 70,000 people’s representatives, starting from union parishad members, will be voters in the electoral college system. Proposals have also come from political parties regarding the number of electoral colleges. One proposal is that if the parliament is divided into upper and lower houses, then 500 electoral colleges. Another proposal is to increase the number of electoral colleges to 576 by including members of the upper and lower houses as well as members of the district councils and city corporations. Jamaat is willing to accept any of the three proposals, said Abdullah Mohammad Taher. He said that Jamaat’s position will be flexible regarding the number of voters.

However, Jamaat has imposed the condition of holding local government elections under the caretaker government in order to accept the proposal to increase the electoral college. Abdullah Mohammad Taher said that it is important that local government elections be fair like the national elections. Otherwise, the opinions of those who will be voters will be questionable.Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Naib-e-Amir Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher talking to reporters. Photo: Dipu
